For the Rough Nights
For the rough nights.
2 AM, or a courthouse morning, or the moment you saw the photo. This page is for right now. Do not read it all. Pick one thing.
First: if you are thinking about hurting yourself
Stop here. Call or text 988 right now, or call 911. That is bigger than this website, and there are people whose entire job is this exact moment. Please make the call first.
Come back to your senses, literally
š 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Wherever you are, name out loud: five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, one thing you can taste. Slowly. This walks your mind out of the spiral and back into the room, one sense at a time.
šµ Warmth in both hands
Make something warm: tea, cocoa, warm milk, anything at all. Hold the mug with both hands and feel the heat in your palms before the first sip. Warmth tells the body it is safe and home, which is exactly what 2 AM forgets.
šµ One song
Put on one song you loved before any of this started, and do nothing else while it plays. Three minutes of music you know by heart reminds your body it existed, whole, before this chapter, and will after it.
š¬ļø The longest exhale
Breathe in through your nose for four counts, out through your mouth for eight, like blowing through a straw. Five times. The long exhale is a hardware switch: it tells your heart, directly, that the danger has passed.
ā³ The wave rule
The peak of a feeling, even the unbearable kind, typically lasts about ninety seconds before it starts to fall. Do not argue with the wave. Put your hand on your chest, watch the clock, and let it crest. You have outlasted every wave so far.
š± Text, do not scroll
The phone in your hand at 2 AM has two doors: their social media, or one safe person. Text the person: awake and it is a bad one, no need to reply. Even unanswered, saying it to someone real breaks the spell of the empty room.
When you need more than we are
BraveAfter is emotional support, not treatment, and there are seasons of this that deserve a professional in your corner. If you have not eaten or slept properly in days, if the dark thoughts are getting louder instead of quieter, if drinking or pills have become the coping plan, that is not failure. That is a signal. Talk to your doctor, or find a licensed professional near you through the Psychology Today directory. The strongest women in this community are the ones who called in reinforcements.
When the wave passes: write one line in your journal, even at 2 AM. Morning will come, and so will we, at 7.
